Many plant varieties systemically reproduce. With plants, systemic reproduction begins when a fragment containing meristematic growth points is disembodied from an individual. Then under certain environmental conditions, the fragment is able to develop its own apical shoot and root meristems; creating an entirely new individual out of the systemic DNA of the original individual, a clone.

Cloning is utilized by cannabis farmers to sustain the genetics of strong plants, systemically reproducing varieties as well as ensure the sex of the next generation is female. When cloning, cannabis farmers choose a desirable individual colloquially referred to as “the mother”; they then cut off select fragments and transplant them in to an optimal growing medium. After transplanting, they care for the cuttings, recreating specific conditions that optimize the development of the cutting in to a new clone.
